Chainsaw Safety Tips

  • Always have a partner when operating a chainsaw, or inform someone about your location and expected return time if working alone.

  • Do not use a chainsaw on a ladder—always ensure you're on stable footing.

  • Always start the chainsaw on the ground to ensure control.

  • Keep vehicles clear of the felling zone to avoid accidents.

  • Avoid operating the chainsaw above shoulder height and use caution during adverse weather conditions.

  • Wear appropriate PPE such as safety glasses, gloves, ear protection, and chainsaw-resistant pants.

  • Ensure secure footing before using the chainsaw to avoid loss of control.

  • Use the correct chainsaw size for the job and never operate it with one hand.

  • Engage the chain brake when walking any distance with a chainsaw.

  • Do not operate chainsaws under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • Never turn your back on a falling tree, and be aware of your surroundings.

  • Ensure proper warnings are in place before felling a tree in populated areas.

  • Rest if fatigued—avoid operating a chainsaw if you're feeling unwell or exhausted.

  • Be properly trained—only operate a chainsaw after receiving appropriate training.

Essential Chainsaw PPE

To minimize injury risks, it's crucial to wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including:

  • CSA-approved safety glasses with side shields, goggles, or face shields.

  • CSA-approved footwear with cut-resistant materials.

  • Hard hat for head protection (CSA-approved).

  • Hearing protection (CSA-approved).

  • Leather gloves with ballistic nylon on the back for hand protection.

  • Leg protection (pants or chaps) featuring ballistic nylon pads.

  • Know when to use fall protection equipment, such as harnesses, belts, and lanyards, for extra safety.

By following these protocols and undergoing the proper training, you'll ensure a safe, compliant, and effective chainsaw operation environment.
